Spring Duck Hunting Update

Spring Duck Hunting Update

April 03, 2010 by

Ducks are here! Seen 10 drake greenheads together today, and some divers off looking for some open water. It was nice to see some ducks finally as the Canada geese have flying low over head the past 2 weeks. Once the ice is all gone i hope to get some pictures of the fully plummed birds as they will pour in to claim the best nesting sites in the marsh. The water levels are real low this spring so the birds will need to nest in the potholes and small lakes in the lower regions of the province. The prairie regions could be very dry this year if they are left without much rain.

I personally look forward to a bit lower water levels as it does improve our duck hunting over water. The vegetation  food sources are much more abundant with low water levels than with high water. 2 years ago our lake Winnipegosis was at a 50 yr high water mark.

And last year was back to normal levels. Hopefullly we don't see a rise this year, so far so good.

Been out a few more times looking for sheds but nothing has turned up yet. I still have a few places that i want to search and i know there are many more.

That's all for now.
